full dark fun.
I honestly can’t remember where this is. I know it’s somewhere in Rome but that’s about it. I had a lot of late night shooting sessions on this trip and was often wandering (stumbling) through the streets well past 3-4 in the morning. It’s no wonder why I have so many ‘mystery’ photos.
Sometimes late night photography can be a big pain in the ass. If you take a look at the before and after, you’ll see what I mean. When It’s full on night, photos tend to take on the cast of whatever light is present. In this case, there are only a few tungsten light sources, creating a total yellow cast that completely eliminates the nuance of color and detail. The remedy was a (fairly) simple matter of selectively de-saturating the yellows to restore some of the white values. It’s not terribly technical, it’s just a bit time consuming.
If you shoot just before full dark, for example during blue hour, you have a much greater chance of retaining normal color and detail since there Is more ambient light… Or, like me, you can spend Sunday afternoon repainting color values. 😉
